After daydreaming us into a frenzy over the last five years, Mac Demarco has single handedly earned himself a cult following through his consistent delivery of effortless talents. This Old Dog was recorded and produced whilst Mac moved from NY to LA. We were promised in interviews that this most recent project would be something a little different, and he claimed that this album would showcase the start of a new direction for his music.
Opening strong with My Old Man, the initial synth beat strikes my attention as something a little unexpected, yet as the track continues it falls back into the Demarco we know, an enjoyable smouldering effortless voice, accompanied by lazy guitar. The album as a whole is relaxing and eases you from the first to the last track, with stand outs being the piercing yet awe inspiring melody of On A Level and the soft Sunday tones of Still Beating. The blissful seven minutes of Moonlight On The River shows the change he had promised, towards the end using a pre-recorded voice sample. All in all, in terms of giving an album with a change of direction, Mac may have fallen just below the mark. Yet in terms of the music, everything this guy touches is still turning to gold. No complaints here.
