Cry Out is the solo project of Rosie Davis, a veteran of the Halifax, Nova Scotia, punk scene. No doubt, the name will be unfamiliar to most readers but this remarkable EP deserves a home in the collection of any fan of inventive, challenging punk.
Opener Your Shame Not Mine and the gloriously chaotic F*cked Silly are both reminiscent of Crass circa Penis Envy or Christ The Album, liberally sprinkled with dashes of Poison Girls or Flux of Punk Indians. The latter also has something of John Lydon, Ari Up and Poly Styrene in the vocals. War Aesthetic is more straight ahead punk, built on powerful and insistent riffing. Closer Garden Song is the ace in the pack. With its soaring vocals, taking in post punk and the positive punk sounds that ultimately gave rise to goth, this is a slice of uplifting beauty.
Sadly, Davis passed away before this could be released by La Vida Es Un Mus. All proceeds go to Davis’ family.
