Gonzo’s Tea Room Review

I have only just moved back to Norwich and one of the things I keep being asked time and time again is ‘have you tried the burgers at Gonzo’s Tea Room yet?’. I had big plans to go to Gonzo’s, drink all the drinks and taste the infamous burgers I kept being told about. Roll on lockdown – especially the first week with solidly bad weather for a long time and it seemed like time to cheer ourselves up with some truly indulgent food.

The first task was to figure out how to find the menu, the website was not overly informative about how to order but that is probably because this is an unexpected twist to how the service is not running. I found Instagram to be the best way to view a menu and keep up with what is going on. There is a number to pre-order your delivery slot for that week these fill up FAST so book when you can. There is also Sunday roast delivery, which looks well worth checking out.

The weekday menu consists of burgers, poutine, wings and of course the most important section ‘booze and beer’. Of course we went for the deal on beer, 4x Chang Lager for £10.00, can’t fault this. The bugers are self described as ‘The Best Damn Burger in Town’ so to test this out I went for a Beanstown Grill, a vegan burger made up of a black bean vegan mince patty, romaine lettuce, tomato and gherkins. The patty was great, very meat like and juicy, the best burger I have had in town since moving back for sure. Tyler had an Alpha Papa burger with bacon (£10.99) and as far as I can tell it was amazing as it lasted all of 5 seconds. The burgers both come with a huge portion of fries, these fries tasted a bit sweet but there were more than enough for leftovers.

We also ordered Maple Leaf Poutine, although these were not vegan I did try some of the fries, these were really well seasoned and salty. The Poutine is the best, if you order one thing from Gonzo’s, make it the Poutine. Not only are the portions huge – again more than enough to reheat for breakfast the next day (don’t judge, all breakfast rules are off in quarantine) but they are a meal in themselves and totally addictive. If you are looking for a quarantine date night or just a week night treat, I would highly recommend Gonzo’s. Delivery slots fill up fast so make sure you get one when you can.

Overall I would rate the food 7/10, the Maple Poutine was amazing, the burgers were too, the only thing that let the food down slightly was the fries that came with the burgers being a bit sweet. The drinks menu is a strong 8/10, great selection and a great match with the food. The food menu I would rate at a 7/10 mainly because it is far trickier to find than it should be but they have made sure there are options for both vegans and meat eaters.
