It’s no secret that the gin market is a pretty competitive one, with numerous gin distilleries already scattered throughout the city. So we attended the launch of a brand new Norwich based gin company; Gyre & Gimble, intrigued to see if they had anything different to offer.
Located next to Strangers Hall, Gyre & Gimble consists of a modern cocktail bar and onsite distillery which doubles as a Gin Academy. Something that will definitely go down well with local gin fans! Comprising of a team with over 10 years of experience in the industry, they took inspiration from author Lewis Carroll’s poem ‘Jabberwocky’ which coined the term ‘Gyre & Gimble’. Which according to scholars when translated means ‘to do something strange’. A cute nod to the company’s city location.
Now on to the fun bit. The Outline team were treated to 3 tasty tipples:
Nowhow: a take on the classic London Dry gin that works well straight, or with a splash of tonic.
Queen of Hearts: a sweet but rich gin, infused with cherry and custard apples.
Callooh Callay: a seawater based gin enriched with local samphire and lavender. (This one was our personal favourite!)
All three spirits are reasonably priced at £35 for a 70cl bottle.
Gyre & Gimble have also focused their attention on keeping their carbon footprint as low as possible, with their bottles consisting of 95% recyclable materials. They’ve also developed a close relationship with local animal and environmental charities. From every bottle sold of Callooh Callay, 15% of the proceeds will go to local charity, the Friends of Horsey Seals. So you can sip your gin, knowing that a bit of a good has come from your choice of beverage.
It’s fair to say that 2020 was probably not the ideal year to attempt a new business venture, especially one in an area with such stiff competition. But Gyre & Gimble are charging at these uncertain times with gusto; and with whisperings of a soon to be announced rum product, they are certainly going to have their hands full! However, with their emphasis on the local environment, not to mention some truly delicious products, we think they are definitely ones to watch…
