BRIT School graduate Jamie Woon describes his music as "groove-based" R&B so I'm well out of my comfort zone. Thankfully, this isn't the banal R&B-by-numbers that seems to clog up the charts.
Woon has been produced by Burial and this influence has rubbed off in the wonky, woozy sound. Like Burial at his best, on first listen this is gentle comedown music but repeated listening reveals a disquieting, disturbing edge.
None of the songs really stand out. They are all of a decent standard. Woon is a talented songwriter and has a good voice. The music is well played and well executed. This is not exceptional but I suspect that this will be a grower and I can see myself coming back to it regularly, if not necessarily frequently, over the years to come. Woon certainly deserves credit for going his own way and avoiding the obvious.
