I am now well into my fortieth year as a gig goer, so getting the opportunity to take a friend’s young daughter to her first proper gig this evening was for me a rather exciting thing to do. It’s truly fabulous to see such excitement in the air for this young gig goer, her not me!
I have to confess that Miles Kane, is one artist that has somehow managed to slip me by over the years, apart from some of The Last Shadow Puppets material (his collaboration with the Arctic Monkeys front man Alex Turner). I guess there just isn’t enough time to listen to everyone and all of the great music that is out there.
The gig was originally scheduled to take place upstairs in The Waterfront Studio, but was then thankfully moved downstairs to the main venue, such was the demand for tickets and this certainly proved to be a good move. Thankfully, tonight’s audience are a well behaved crowd of all ages, that are just out to thoroughly enjoy themselves and it’s also great to see my plus one having a good and safe time too, just how it should be.
The one-hour set is lively from the beginning, as Kane starts proceedings with Trouble Son taken from his new album, One Man Band that was released just last week and it’s the new release that dominates the set list in the main this evening.
Everyone is soon in the zone, as he roars through new tracks form the recent offering, including The Best Is Yet To Come and the excellent Baggio, with one young man in the audience sporting a Roberto Baggio shirt into the bargain. He also throws in a live debut for Heartbreaks too.
Standing Next To Me from that said Shadow Puppets collaboration is a show highlight, taken from such a fantastic musical partnership. There are some real raucous moments as the lively crowd hang on too and sing along to his every word, particularly the excellent Rearrange, Don’t Forget Who You Are, Come Closer and Never Taking Me Alive. Maybe the best really is still yet to come from Miles Kane? But based on this performance for now thank you very much he is doing quite magnificently with this wonderful collection of new songs.
It’s been a great show and I hope that my guest this evening is still as passionate about live music as I am still when she hits her sixth decade. She may well be wheeling me down here to gigs in the years to come, if I should be so lucky, particularly the ones that finish at a similar and much earlier time!
Everyone has had a great night and they go home super happy, the smiles on all of the faces that are either leaving the venue as the lights go up or of those that are in the queue to do the meet and greet, get selfies and some signed merchandises are a good indication of that. What a nice guy, as he smiled, chatted and signed away. Other artists would do well to also crack a smile and spend some time with the people post gig that buy the records and tickets to shows. Take note!!!
