Mimi Webb - Henry Moodie - Blake Rose

When I heard that Mimi Webb was performing at the LCR in Norwich, I jumped at the chance to see her perform live and the opportunity to review the show! I first heard of Mimi Webb on TikTok, back in 2020, when we were all cooped up inside for months on end, in lockdown. She would post videos of her playing her music to family members in the car to capture their reaction to her newly developed tracks. Which eventually progressed to her being played on Radio 1, her songs blowing up on TikTok and here she is now on her UK wide tour, ‘The Amelia Tour’. So, her journey has been pretty amazing so far and I’ve seen parts of it all in real time.

Arriving at the venue was just the same as any other LCR concert, huge queues, and lots of excitement, but then we spotted Mimi in a top window of the building prepping for the show with other people, which was quite funny to see a little sneak peek of her!

There were two supports acts of the evening, starting with Henry Moodie, followed by Blake Rose. Henry Moodie, an 18-year-old singer songwriter started off the night shortly after the doors opened, so as people filed in, he was the first person on stage, ready to set the evening off to a good start. I didn’t hear much of his music as we were still coming inourselves, but the short period I saw him play was very impressive, the pop artists played his catchy and debut release, ‘You were there for me’, a beautiful song to open the stage.

Blake Rose was the second support act, all the way from Perth Australia to play his set and it was worth the 20-hour flight in my opinion. He had a confident and charming stage presence, talking to the audience and engaging with people through verbal interactions and coming down from the stage onto the floor level. I hadn’t heard of him before the show, but I really loved his music and high energy he brought to the stage, his band were also of high spirits which set a fun and positive tone, with lots of enthusiasm from the guitarist. Blake Rose opened the set with an upbeat song, swapping between playing guitar, keyboard and singing between each title. The song which stood out for me was his third played song, ‘Dizzy’, a super catchy chorus, and upbeat tune throughout!

After both supports acts, the anticipation for Mimi Webb to enter the stage was high! Not long after her band were setting up on stage, her familiar voice came over the speakers with a recorded opening sequence to introduce herself, her journey, and her music. Entering the stage, to her much-loved song ‘Ghost of You’, she walked down the central stairs to greet the crowd on the main stage. Looking incredible in a lilac metallic two piece, of a halter neck corset, flared trousers and to top it off, matching heeled boots. Bringing high energy the second she stepped out, accompanied by her band, which played incredibly well throughout the evening.

Standing in the audience, I was completely captivated by her music, forgetting how many well-known chart number Mimi has, she kept rolling them out in the first half with ‘24/5’, ‘See You Soon’, ‘Is it Possible’ and ‘Roles Reversed’. All so beautifully sang, especially her vocals during ‘Is it Possible’, which were incredible with higher and longer notes reached in the chorus, with the slightly slower paced song. Halfway through her performance, she toned it down briefly, to play a more relaxed and slow tempo song, a new release on her album and a song close to her, called ‘Amelia’, named after herself, which is her full name. In the Press Release for ‘The Amelia Tour’, she said, ‘The album is named Amelia, my full
first name, as there are two sides of me that I want people to get to know. There’s Amelia, the girl from the UK countryside who loves to be at home with her family, friends, and dogs; and Mimi, the pop artist who loves to be up on stage traveling the world. It was important for me to capture this duality with songs written for both of those girls, and I’m excited for you all to get to know them!’

I feel like this is exactly what the song did too, getting in touch with the side of her personality you don’t see on stage or on a screen, talking to her younger self and sending messages of reassurance through all her years of growing up. I thought this was a really touching song, which so many can resonate with, growing up and going through so manyexperiences you never anticipate, but you just have to enjoy it, as ultimately, it’s all okay in the end!

The second half of the show was full of more upbeat songs, getting the crowd clapping and dancing along with ‘Red Flags’ and ‘Freezing’, some of my personal favourites, and it seemed like everyone else’s too. Closing the show on a real high, with ‘House on Fire’ and the audience gave a lengthy applause and many cheers of all volumes and pitches to end her set. Mimi performed an amazing show, hearing her vocals live did not disappoint and confirmed how genuinely talented she is as a singer and performer.
