The last – and indeed the first - time I saw Peach Club, they were a guitar-and-drums duo. They were promising but it felt like something was missing. This, their first gig as a trio, is a whole different proposition. After a slightly uncertain and shaky start, it's clear that the addition of bass makes for a much fuller sound. Coming on like a cross between the Birthday Party and proto-riot grrls UT and Frightwig, this is a fierce and appealingly rough-and-ready set. By the closing duo of I'm A Bitch and Not Your Girl, I've been won over. (8/10)
It's less than a month since I last reviewed Bald Wife so I'll keep this short. They've developed even in that short time. The sludgy, doomy stoner rock is taking on a tasty avant-garde, art-noise edge. Jack may have been under the weather but you'd never have known from the stonking Blood Red Leaf, Sick and She. (9/10)
I’m pretty stumped as to how to describe NAH's set. There are comparisons to Death Grips but the drums and some of the vocals bring to mind US hardcore and even Earache-style grindcore, while there are elements of Dälek, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and Young Fathers at their most industrial in the samples and loops. The stage is not big enough for NAH. When he is not drumming, he is on the floor, spitting his lyrics and sharing the mic with audience members. The levels of energy NAH gives off and the dense wall of sound bursting from the PA make this one of the most intense gigs I’ve seen for a while. Yes, it is exhausting and punishing and cathartic but also thoroughly entertaining and I left smiling. (9.5/10)
A big shout to Eddie Griffiths, Demo and the Owl Sanctuary for putting on this great night of free entertainment.
