The Darkness - Last of our Kind

I have to admit, before listening I was feeling a tad sceptical as to whether or not these guys could pull off another album that would match the massive success that was Permission to Land back in 2003 (15 year old me was a BIG fan of this album!). However, I am thrilled to tell you that they can and they have succeeded in maintaining the magic, the pizzazz and the humour of days gone by. The album comments on a wide variety of topics; love, heartbreak, the doomed youth of today and, of course, the obligatory opening track dedicated to barbarians. Standard! My point is that from the offset I was giggling away to myself envisaging the potential music videos that will no doubt accompany future singles. A particularly thought provoking line crops up in the second track Open Fire - “Open fire! Give me a hug on a sheep skin rug” and all I can do is picture Justin Hawkins laying suggestively on a rug in front of a fire wearing some kind of mental glitter jumpsuit on MTV. Spine tingling glam rock riffs, thought provoking, highly entertaining and incredibly upbeat material. Local legends The Darkness are well and truly back in the game- and yes, he can still hit those high notes!
